Building and customising the Honka Haiku dream home from scratch is a journey of decisions, creativity and collaboration. For Lena and Torbjörn, it started with a shared vision of a sustainable and beautiful home built in harmony with nature. Here they share their experience, and how they turned the idea for their home into a reality on the island of Värmdö.

A dream of sustainability and natural materials

Building a sustainable and beautiful home was Lena and Torbjörn’s dream. To realise this dream, they chose Honka and the Honka Haiku model, which, as Lena describes, means “authenticity, durability and certainly not thin plaster walls”. With its skillion roof and natural materials, the house was a perfect fit for their plot of land on Värmdö – and the Haiku model truly became an extension of the natural landscape of the archipelago.

The construction process – a personal journey

Building their own home from scratch was a fantastic experience for the couple. “We were able to influence almost every step of the building process,” says Torbjörn. Honka helped them to adjust the floor plan and use leftover materials in unexpected ways, which created a sense of luxury. “There were always new sources of inspiration, which led to new choices and solutions.”

Ecological materials for greater wellbeing

For the couple, the link between home and well-being is obvious. “Building with ecological and sustainable materials from the Nordic region was a given for us,” says Lena. They have no plastic in the walls and the roof is insulated with wood fibre, which contributes to greater well-being.

Tradition meets modern technology

Honka has refined the log house technique, combining tradition with modern technology. Lena and Torbjörn consider it an honour to carry on the tradition of log houses. “Our house is built without plastic, studs on the outer walls, plaster or silicone – just natural materials that combine old with new,” says Torbjörn.

A home for the family and future generations

Lena and Torbjörn moved in in November 2023. The house is now full of life and has become the home they dreamt of – with dinners, celebrations and new memories with family and friends. With five adult children living both in and outside Sweden, the house has become an obvious place to meet up.
